CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PREVIEW
Lahaina, Maui - Arlington High of Riverside, CA is a CIF playoff caliber. The Lions possess height and quickness. Senior guard Calvin Tang is only 5-6, but has been seen with quickness and incredible passes. Sophomore postman Chad Carter stands at 6-7 and can run the court like a guard. For Los Al to come out a winner, it must defend Carter from getting the ball inside the paint. Jeff Grgas may have the assignment to contain Carter. Ryan Keller will have to play his best defense to prevent Tang from penetrating and dishing out to Carter. The Griffins must also able to break the Lions' full court man press.

Against Maryknoll in the Semi-Final, the Lions cause them problems with their 1-3-1 half court trap. It is expected that they will do the same to Los Al and will trap Ryan Keller at mid-court. The key factor is to break their trap with easy lay-ups... or dunks.

Unfortunately Coach Rubio and yours truly will not be able to be at the game as our flight is at 7:50PM. Regardless, Los Al is expected to do well.

LOS AL TOO MUCH FOR ARLINGTON
Lahaina, Maui - The superior team triumphs in the end. Los Al won the 1999 Lahainaluna Invitational tournament. For the first time, Sky Nelson, coach of Lahainaluna HS, expanded the field to 16 and had 5 out of state teams. According to Nelson, he was pleased with the turnout and hoping that success will continue in the future of this tourney. Perhaps one of the more disturbing incidence during the tourney is that Arlington shows little sportmanship after the game, looking to start a revolution during the traditional handshake. The Griffins displayed poise against Arlington, defeating them by a score of 66-52. The Grifs went 5-0 during the 8-day trip to the island of Maui, showing a team unity and focus and the sun and fun did not distract the purpose. Most teams would have taken the opportunity for a nice and relaxed vacation, but the Grifs' intention from the time they landed on the island was to take the trophy home and determination was just what the plan was.
