VERBAL WAR AGAINST MICHAEL ANDERSON MOTIVATES GRIFS TO CAPTURE TITLE
The Varsity began the season the week of November 29th, playing in the Bolsa
Pacifica Tournament. In the opening pool play, the Griffins faced a smaller
but good shooting Estancia
team. However in the end Los Al showed its
superiority in size and talent to win 81-53. Jeff Grgas dunked the basketball
5 times including 2 alley-oops. In the next game against
Savanna, again the
Griffins' height and quickness dominated the contest in winning 85-53.
Bolsa
coach Michael Anderson, who was there Thursday to scout, was quoted as saying
that the "Los Al guards aren't very good, their team will have their minds on
the football game (referring to the CIF semi-final round against LB Poly)
and we will kill them." The Los Al starting guards Ryan Keller (19 points),
Ron Prettyman (22 points) and Jeff Smith (15 points) combined for 56 points
agaisnt Savanna. Our JV coach, Kevin Loftus, confronted Anderson that his
team had better be ready to face a Sunset League team and not a "patsie
Garden Grove League team." Needless to say, it was war on Friday night, but
the Griffins, showing class and sportmanship as always, walloped Bolsa 84-58,
while the Matadors had 1 player (Jon Engle) ejected and Anderson was hit with
a technical foul early in the 2nd quarter. In the championship game, Los Al
faced a very good Claremont
team, it possesses athleticism, quickness, and
a definite CIF quarter to semi final basketball team. Needless to say, it
was an exciting game, Brian Rakusin came off the bench to score 12 points and
pulling down 11 boards in a 55-53 victory. Jeff Grgas was named Tournament MVP,
while Ryan Keller and Ron Prettyman was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Los Al is hosting the
Los Al Main Event the week of December 7th. The team also has a full
12-man roster with Mike Sanford and Steve Shinen joining after the football
season ended.

Winning the tournament was sweet, but the experience of
facing good teams was much more valuable...
